Movie: Tom Sawyer (silent version)
Here’s a historical curio, the silent movie
version of Tom Sawyer. Many readers will be familiar with the story by Mark
Twain even if they haven’t actually read the book. There have been many television
and movie adaptations and this one from 1917 might be the first of them. We
have already seen some of the other versions here.
In this clip, Tom is late for class and is made to go
sit with the girls but not until the schoolmaster beats him with a rather
ineffectual birch. Watch that dust fly!
