Movie: Billie Turf
Billie Turf was the Dutch version of Billy Bunter (“the fat owl of the Remove”) from the Greyfriars school stories of comics, books and television fame. We met Billy previously here.
From 1955, Billy Bunter
comic strips were published in the Netherlands, in the Dutch-language
comic Sjors, with the character renamed Billie Turf.
Billie Turf comic strip albums were published from 1963 onwards, and have continued
into the 21st century.
Three Billie Turf
movies were made by Henk van der Linden between 1978 and 1983, mostly spelling
the name of the main character as “Billy Turf”: Billy Turf het dikste
studentje ter wereld (1978), Billy Turf Haantje de
voorste (1981) and Billy Turf contra Kwel (1982).
Billie is always in
conflict with Master Kwel. The films seem to be aimed at very
young children and involve lots of slapstick comedy, with lots of cane swishing
and shaving-foam pies being pushed into people’s faces and so on.
In this clip from the 1978 film, Tom Janssen plays Billie (the other films were made
with different actors). Billie has stolen and eaten a big
cake from the fridge and gets found out. There is a comic chase and he gets
stuck in a window trying to make his escape. This makes his bottom a perfect
target. In the films there are many scenes of boys rubbing their backsides in
anticipation of a caning but nothing else generally happens.
The movie is on YouTube.
