Is there a ‘topsy-turvey logic’ to school caning?

If it is wrong to cane soldiers, why is it right to cane children? – a correspondent to a local paper asked in 1955.

Cane for children

but not for thugs

SOME MPs are running a campaign to prevent British soldiers serving abroad from being caned if they break civil laws.

Here is another example of the topsy-turveydom of the British mind. Soldiers in this country cannot be caned.

Now it seems they must not be caned for acts of brutality in other countries. The worst of thugs cannot receive corporal punishment in this country.

Yet there is no outcry about young children being caned in schools for much more minor offences.

If caning is wrong for the thugs and the cosh-boys, it is surely wrong for children.
