TRUANT
WHO
STOLE
GOT
CANED
AND
A
HIDING
A SCHOOLBOY who played truant and stole from his own
parents was given a bit of old-fashioned discipline, a court heard yesterday [6
April 1979.]
He was caned at school and given a good hiding by his
parents. It was a case where “spare the rod and spoil the child” was very
fitting, Reading Juvenile Court was told
Meter
But the boy, who is 15 and lives in Reading, was
ordered to pay another penalty by magistrates – this time a financial one. He
was fined £35 and ordered to meet the costs of the proceedings.
The boy admitted stealing £24 from his parents’
electricity meter and stealing a £75 bicycle.
A second 15-year-old admitted helping him rifle the
meter, taking a similar sum from his own parents’ meter and stealing £100 from
his mother’s handbag and his father’s wallet. He was fined £65 and ordered to
pay costs.
A third boy, a 14-year-old from Reading, admitted
being involved in the bike theft. The case against him was adjourned until 27 April.
The court heard the second boy played truant and filed
down a key to get into his parents’ meter. He tried to make it look as if
someone had broken into the house. Then he and the first boy took cash from the
other meter and divided the spoils. They threw the key in a river.
The second youth said he took money from his parents
over a period of months.
Mr Robert Ballard, prosecuting, said the theft of the
racing bicycle was at the Ministry of Agriculture Centre in Church Lane,
Shinfield. The two involved later sold it for £5.
Mr David Petherick, defending the first boy, said:
“His father believed he deserved a good hiding and this is what he got. He has
already been punished. He also got a caning at school. You may consider a good
saying in this case is ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’”
The second boy’s father said the boy is now paying
them back.
