Schoolboy spankings sells ....!

A while ago we saw (here) how The Gem used a schoolboy spanking picture to advertise a forthcoming attraction in the story paper.

Corporal punishment must have been a big selling point with all the early comics. As this selection shows drawings of canings, slipperings and assorted spankings were heavily featured on front pages. Remember competition between titles for a boy’s pennies each week (and more than a few adult men?) was fierce and it is probable that many wouldn’t decide which one to buy until they saw them all displayed at the newspaper shops – the main picture advertised the delights to be found inside.
