Movie: The Custard Boys
The Custard Boys started as a novel written by pubic
school headmaster John
Rae.
It tells the story of a group of London boys who are
evacuated to a Norfolk village during the Second World War. It is intended as a
serious story about how boys interpret what is going on in the adult world.
There is a strong theme of anti-Semitism.
In this clip from the 1979 film version, made in England
by the Children’s Film Unit, John Curlew who has been tasked with looking after
a new Jewish boy and fails, is caned by the headmaster.
The CFU was a unique British film production unit which offered
children from the ages of 10 to 16 the opportunity to learn about all aspects
of filmmaking, and to participate as part of the crew in the making of
professional-quality feature films. The children were directly involved from
the initial concept of a film right through to the completed product.
The film was made by the pupils of Forest Hill School,
London.
The Custard Boys was released as a DVD but it is no
longer easily available.

Thank you for posting this. "The Custard Boys" can be viewed in full on YouTube. Forest Hill School's adaptation of John Rae's novel was made in 1979. It's a rather blurred print - but good enough.
