Why cannot caning be abolished? It seems to be a sport that only schoolmasters enjoy.

Only last week at my school a boy was given two sound whacks for quite a minor offence.

The master made a little noise to clear his throat. The boy imitated this sound, much to the amusement of his form-mates.

Just for this he was caned.

Had I been the master, I would either have made the boy apologise or have him kept in.

This kind of punishment will certainly not add to the master’s popularity.
