Caning for boy who put rat poison in school food
‘JOKER’
PUT RAT POISON
IN
SCHOOL FOOD
A BOY of 14 has admitted “lacing” school meals with
rat poison.
The boy, whose name is being withheld, has been caned
by his headmaster.
Parents of children at the school, near Barnsley,
Yorks, have been told to watch for symptoms of poisoning.
The boy told Mr. Henry Herdman, headmaster of the
700-pupil school, that he was unaware that the substance he put in yoghurt as a
prank was the poison Warfarin.
When the “prank” was discovered several children were
given blood tests.
Mr. Herdman said: “I’m quite satisfied that the boy
did not know what he was doing.
“I am more concerned that the poison has been left
near the school kitchen after being used during the summer holidays to deal
with rodents.
“None of the children was made ill because we believe
only small quantities were consumed.
“For that reason the matter has been dealt with
internally and there was no reason for the involvement of the police.”
Chief Inspector Peter Owen, head of Barnsley C.I.D.
said: “We are quite satisfied that no criminal offence has been committed.”
