Parents, not police, should birch their sons, says school head

A former superintendent of an approved school said at
Stafford yesterday that he had seen policemen detailed to birch a boy pass the
birch round. None of them wanted to use it.
“The whole thing is a farce,” said Mr. J. D. Johnson
at a conference organised by the Staffordshire Federation of Women’s
Institutes.
It was far better for the parents to do it, he added.
Bad behaviour could be cured by judicious use of the rod.
He knew of many far worse ways of punishing a boy in
school than caning him, but the cane ought to be there as a background. A good
many boys would not respond to anything except a good tanning.
THE REMEDY:
Better family life, education in its widest sense, improved living conditions,
facilities and training for a proper use of leisure, less sentiment towards
corporal punishment.
