TV Drama: Birth of a Nation
How many of us were terrified at school by the crazy, bullying gym teacher? (You probably call them “coaches” in America.) They were right little Hitlers who made up their own rules and in schools in England enforced them with a heavy rubber-soled plimsoll.
Just like Barratt (Bruce Payne)
in the 1983 drama Birth
of a Nation, written by David Leland
for Central Independent Television (UK). He’s an authoritarian bully whose
fearsome approach to teaching involves loudly berating the kids and whacking
them with his slipper for even the slightest thing.
Birth of a Nation is available to buy on DVD as part of a box set called Tales out of School.
