Movie: Fun at St. Fanny’s
Fun at St. Fanny’s is a
corny comedy from 1955 set in an English private school. In the tradition of Will Hay or Whacko! it involves a
seedy headmaster who is trying to work a scam.
If anyone is really
interested in the plot it goes like this. Gormless 25-year-old Cardew
“The Cad” Robinson, wealthy
beneficiary of the Robinson Will, should have left St. Fanny’s School many
years ago. However, seedy headmaster Dr. Septimis Jankers (Fred Emney) is in the coils of shady bookmaker Harry the Scar
(boxer Freddie
Mills) and has so far kept his
golden goose perched firmly at the bottom of the class. Blissfully unaware of
nefarious intrigue around him, Cardew continues to flirt coyly with the French
mistress and gamble for school dinners on the form room roulette wheel. But
canny Scots solicitor McTavish has been sent to investigate.
The film also features Ronnie Corbett as a schoolboy. He, of course, went onto greater things
in his comedy career.
As is expected in this type
of English films there is lots of cane wielding and swishing, but very little
action.
The film was restored from
oblivion by the British Film Institute and can be streamed
online here.
In this clip the boys led
by Robinson have been playing roulette in the classroom when things become a
little raucous. Enter the headmaster ...
