‘Cane Best’
Before passing sentience on an 18-year-old youth who had
pleaded guilty at Warwick Assizes to indecently assaulting a girl, Mr Justice
Croom-Johnson commented at Birmingham Assizes today: “The old-fashioned cane is
the best thing for him – teach him some sense – but the advantages of the
public school are not open to people who would benefit so much by them.”
Binding the youth over, the Judge said: “If you do not
behave yourself, you will be brought back here, and if the law has not been amended
by then, authorizing people like you to be soundly whipped, you will go to
prison for a very long time.”
