Millionaire’s son in caning row

Here’s an interesting piece of social history from 1954. A millionaire’s son (in the days when a million pounds was worth something!) is caught shoplifting but the chief constable doesn’t prosecute him because the headmaster at his posh school gave him a ‘severe caning’.

  1. One wonders if the caning was as severe as the one David Niven describes in his autobiography. It ought to have been.

  2. Not very sore l would have thought, and in the pic above the master is standing on the wrong side of him. How can he hit him properly like that?
