Is caning ‘barbaric’
Here’s another example of a local
newspaper in England soliciting the views of the public on the use of the cane
in schools (we’ve seen others here).
In 1997 a paper in Basingstoke, Hampshire visited the town centre ‘to thrash
out the caning question.’
This was ten years after corporal
punishment had been banned in state schools.

published in the Basingstoke Gazette, 10 February 1997

I know newspapers love a dramatic headline but 'barbarianism'? Nice pic btw. TR
ReplyDeleteThe issue with articles like this is that they often paint Headmasters as Wackford Squeers types, when the reality, certainly by the eighties, was very different. The cane was already in steep decline before the ban and tended to be used sparingly, mainly as a deterrent in specific cases. Calling it ‘barbaric’ feels a bit click‑baity to me.
