Christmas Present for Charne
It’s Christmas time and back in the day
that meant a spate of seasonal annuals went on sale – just right to fill the
Christmas stockings.
One that started in the 1950s was Raymond
Glendenning’s Book of Sport for Boys. Glendenning was a famous sports
commentator – mainly on the wireless – at the time.
The annual included a school story written
especially for it by Frank
Richards of Billy
Bunter fame. Richards wrote under many
pennames about many schools and for this annual he invented a Fourth Form at
Felgate School.
In this story to try to get on the good
side of their form master Mr Charne the boys decide to give him a cake as a
present … with unintended consequences.
We saw another story from the annual here.
As published in Raymond
Glendenning’s Book of Sport for Boys (Andrew Dakers: 1961)

It might be my imagination but I feel sure there must be several Frank Richards stories that feature cakes.
