Strict rules for caning in Tasmania

Tasmania had very strict regulations about the use of the cane in schools, its Director of Education said in 1934 after a father assaulted a master who, he said, had caned his 11-year-old son too severely.

  1. Expanding the pic at the top of this blog post. It seems that the slightly older boy on the left. Is also holding a cane (you can just barely see the top of it over the nearest victim's right thigh).

So is this boy planning to get involved in giving canings? Or is he just bringing an extra cane because the teacher has asked for it?

    1. Sorry to disappoint, but the other boy is holding a pen not an extra cane. I've got a copy of the original illustration but Blogger won't let me paste it with this comment. There's a speech bubble above the master's head which says: "I hope everyone is taking note and paying attention, otherwise he may find himself being caned like these two!"
