The Long Day Closes
is a film is set in Liverpool in the mid-1950s. It is about the childhood
memories of a shy twelve-year-old boy Bud who is trapped by poverty and his
homosexual feelings.
The school he attends in the inner city is
typical of its type and time with boys bullying and brutal teachers. In this
clip the teacher Mr Nichols canes a number of boys in his class “just to show
you who’s boss.”
The film was written and directed by
Terrence Davies, whom we
met previously here.
