TV Drama: David Copperfield

 

The Charles Dickens novel David Copperfield has been adapted many times over for films and television. Here’s a 1999 BBC TV adaptation.

After his father dies and his mother remarries, David bites his step-father while he attempts to thrash him and subsequently is sent away to Salem House, a boarding school, under a ruthless headmaster named Mr Creakle who is played here by Ian McKellen, who deserved an award for over-acting.

Incidentally, young David is played by Daniel Radcliffe in his first acting role; he went on to become boy wizard Harry Potter.

The two-part series is available on DVD and Blu-ray.
