TV Drama: How Green Was My Valley

How Green Was My Valley started as a novel by Richard Llewellyn and has been dramatized many times (we met the 1941 movie version here).

It is the story of the Morgans, a mining family in South Wales during the reign of Queen Victoria. It centres around Huw, the youngest boy, whose academic ability enables him to consider a future away from the mines.

Here are two clips from a BBC TV, 20th Century Fox television co-production from 1975. In the first Huw is caned in front of the class after a playground fight by schoolmaster Mr Jonas, played by Clifford Rose.

In the second, friends of Huw’s father go to the school to seek revenge on Jonas and cane him across the desk with the children enjoying every moment.
