TV drama: Endeavour
In England back in the day PE (Physical Education)teachers had a bit of a reputation as bullies who were only to eager to
humiliate boys and beat their backsides with whatever came to their hand; as
often as not a rubber-soled plimsoll.
We saw examples of these men in action in the TV
dramas Birth
of a Nation and the movie, P’tang,
Yang, Kipperbang.
Here’s another example from the UK TV police series Endeavour. It is
set in the 1960s and in this episode called Icarus from 2018 (series 5, episode
6) Endeavour goes ‘undercover’ as a master at a public school near Oxford after
the mysterious disappearance of a teacher.
The scene doesn’t really advance the plot but it does
demonstrate something about the awfulness of the school. A boy is held down
across a gym horse by two other boys while the master flogs his backside with a
heavy strap. Meanwhile, the other boys look one chanting one ... two ... three,
and so on as a dozen strokes land. Then something rather unexpected happens ...
Episodes of Endeavour are often rebroadcast on digital television in the UK and are available on the catch-up service ITV hub. It is also available to buy on DVD.

He didn't look as though he was going to stop at twelve. That's got to hurt; a full-on leathering with a thick strap delivered by a PE teacher.
