The cane as ‘nuclear deterrent’
This editorial comment in a local newspaper in England in 1981 is in favour of keeping the cane in schools. But is the writer correct to liken its deterrent to that of a nuclear bomb?

For me it wasn't a nuclear deterrent as I was something of a recidivist and caned as a result but I have no doubt it was definitely a deterrent for many boys. I think it probably held a kind of mystique that when broken reduced it's effectiveness as a deterrent somewhat but it was still an effective punishment nonetheless. TR
