Memories: Threat of the paddle did wonders

In 1994, the U.S. media gave lots of space and time to the case of Michael Fay, an 18-year-old American who was sentenced in Singapore to six cuts of the cane on his bare buttocks after a conviction for vandalism.

The case prompted a journalist in Florida to recall his own paddling experiences at school.
