Extract: The Only Way

Here’s a schoolboy tale with a difference, published in 1911. Comics sometimes view canings and corporal punishment more generally very light heartedly. Not so, in this story called The Only Way and written by Frank Richards (of Billy Bunter fame). The extract below speaks for itself, but if you want the full story from the Magnet, issue No 0186, dated 2 September 1911, you can find it on the Friardale website here.

  1. I always like the sound of a riding crop. I grew up with horses and a friend of mine lived near by on a farm. I used to get a session with my stepdad’s thick leather belt when I stepped out of line, but my friend was once taken out to the stables by his dad and punished with his own riding crop.
