Mr. Chips actor recalls own canings

Martin Clunes who played the lead role in a British television version of the iconic school story Goodbye Mr. Chips in 2002 recalled his own schooldays: ‘I was caned on a daily basis – but I was a nightmare,’ he said during an interview publicising the programme.

The version, broadcast on ITV, unlike the 1939 movie did not include the schoolmaster swishing his cane across a backside (see photo below). We saw a clip of that scene with Robert Donat playing Chips here.
