Extract: Master in the Purple Mask
Here’s a load of nonsense from
the boys’ story paper Hotspur from the 1930s. The Master in the
Purple Mask is about White Cross College which was once a fine school but now is
going to the dogs.
To cut a long story short a
new janitor called Bill Socks is appointed to the school with the task of
cleaning the place up (but not in the way usually associated with caretakers).
But Bill Socks can’t make much
difference as a janitor so late at night he dons an academic cap and gown and
hiding his eyes with a purple mask he picks up a cane and gets to work.
