Cane legal … but rarely used

 

In the run-up to the abolition of corporal punishment in UK schools in 1987 local newspapers across the land would routinely return to the subject, collecting views of teachers, parents and pupils alike.

Here’s an example from 1984 and if the headmasters interviewed are to believed, the cane was rarely used …

  1. Interesting that girls were still getting the cane in 1984... my step sister got caned at school in 1982 and I got her to describe it to me in minute detail!
