Favourite TV Drama Clips: 10
School Play is a BBC
TV drama that was broadcast in November 1979
and then all but disappeared and as a result seems to have become part of folklore.
The play is set in ‘1950ish’ and its
author Frederic Raphael,
says it’s based on his experiences as a boy at Charterhouse
School in the late 1940s and early 1950s. All the schoolboys are played by
adult actors.
This clip includes the scene that most
people who saw the original broadcast remember and it makes Number 10 in my personal Top 20
favourite school CP scenes from TV
drama.
The story so far is that the Monitors
(prefects) in the House are clamping down on boys who are being ‘festive’
(meaning cheeky). After an incident during ping pong in Long Room one boy
cheeks the Monitor Perkins but does not own up to it.
Later, the Monitors suspect that Tony
Younger was the culprit and in this extract they call him to the study for a
‘bumming’. Meanwhile, the boys believe that Simon Julius Rose, a new boy
(‘grunt’), ‘showed up’ (informed on) Younger and he is shunned by the other
boys.

Did Sixth Formers actually have private rooms? These "prefects" are rather old, ne cest-pas? Did Julius actually spill the beans?
