Favourite TV Drama Clips: 14
Here’s number 14 in my personal Top 20 favourite school CP scenes from TV drama.
It’s another one that I think feels
entirely authentic. It’s from the BBC TV series WPC 56,
a police drama set in a small town in the English Midlands in the mid-1950s.
In this clip from series 2, episode 5, PC
Perkins has stopped two boys fighting outside a school. He realises that one of
them is bullying the other so he reports it to the headmaster, who promptly
canes them both.

Upon entering the classroom, looks like a boy has been signaled out & has been made to put on the infamous Dunce Hat (?). Interesting touch defining the whole institution there. Then, caning the two boys' hands. Man. Am I the only one who views hand-caning as nearing a barbaric practice? I mean, caning the bottom does NOT seem that way to me at all. I wrestle with this personal inner discrepancy.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand though; they both had to put both hands out but only got three strokes?
ReplyDeleteIt does feel quite realistic, but I can't help imagine that three strokes of a thin whip cane would have been better across the bottom? The way the boys react to the stokes across their hands is a nice touch though.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really satisfying swishing sound. Obviously painful as the second boy is whimpering.
