Memories: The Value of the cane
Sometimes when I see letters to newspapers
about receiving corporal punishment I wonder if the writer isn’t taking us for
a ride.
Here, the anonymous O.S. suggests that no boy should miss being caned at school, and, of course, beatings at school did him ‘the world of good.’

I think the writer of the letter is telling the truth about his feelings. Because, he is obviously now an adult and therefore isn't getting caned any more. If you asked him about it when he was still a 13 year old "whippersnapper" fresh from prep school, I bet he would answer something different. (Unless the school were censoring his letters which of course they did.)
ReplyDeleteThe other weird thing is that when he talks about his "best friend" who used to "train the muscles of his right arm by dealing with him". It seems almost certain he means being caned by a prefect not by a teacher.
I think he's really sincere.
