Favourite School CP Movie Clips: 7
I don’t suppose I need to tell readers of
this blog that the movie The Basketball Diaries is the one where Leonardo
DiCaprio gets his rear end beat with a huge paddle by a Catholic priest in
front of his classmates.
It comes in at number 7 in my own personal
all-time
favourite school corporal punishment scenes
from mainstream movies.
And that’s probably as much as you want to
know before you head for the clip at the bottom of this post.
Anyhow, the film was released by New
Line Cinema in 1995 and DiCaprio was
20 years old at the time but he made a passable senior high school student. The
film
was based on the autobiography of Jim
Carroll, a promising high school basketball player who develops a heroin
addiction.
At the end of the clip the school bell
rings for end of class and DiCaprio says “Too bad Father I was just starting to
enjoy myself.” I suspect a few viewers thought the same.

Incidentally, DiCaprio also got a dose of
the paddle in the 2023 film Killers of the Flower Moon (but not in a schools
context, so we won’t let it detain us here.)
