Court fines prefect who slapped and caned pupil
It was not unusual in the years when
corporal punishment in schools was still legal in Britain to see schoolmasters
charged with assault after they administered canings. If news reports were to
be believed they mostly always were acquitted.
Here’s an unusual case from 1910. A school prefect is convicted of assault after slapping a pupil on the face. He and other prefects then gave the boy 12 licks ‘on the back.’
As published in Hull Daily News,
21 July 1910.
