Retiring schoolmaster caned 5,000 boys during career
“I’ve always made it a rule to give someone a spanking as soon as the lesson begins,” says Mr. Palm, who is retiring after 47 years as a schoolmaster. “Then I find there’s no more trouble tor the rest of the day,” he told reporters in 1956.
He aims to spank
Retiring school teacher Mr.
Louis Palm says he has spanked about 5,000 children in 47 years of teaching. “And
every one of them deserved it too,” he added.
Mr. Palm. 68, leaves the
Trinity day school in Toledo, Ohio [United States], this week.
His favorite weapon of
discipline has always been a 30-inch birch rod.
“It’s no good using your
hand you only hurt yourself,” he said.
Only 5 feet 6 inches tall,
Mr. Palm says it has always been his policy to show his class “who’s boss.”
He has perfected his own
classroom disciplining method.
“I’ve always
made it a rule to give someone a spanking as soon as the lesson begins,” he
says. “Then I find there’s no more trouble tor the rest of the day.
“I haul the
offender out in front of the class.
“Then he has to
bend forward and put his hands on my table.
“I give him a few
whacks on the rumps – it’s the only place to spank.”
The best rod Mr. Palm ever
owned was given to him by the father of one of his most unruly pupils.
It lasted for five painful
years.
Mr. Palm’s only regret in
his retirement is he feels he has years of teaching – and spanking – ahead of
him yet.
Nevertheless, his formula
must have worked.
Three hundred of his former
pupils are going to give him a farewell dinner.
“Well, it's always been
discipline tempered with love. you Know,” he said.
