TV Drama: Long John Silver
The Adventures
of Long John Silver was one of the earlier television adaptations of a
classic book – Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel Treasure
Island. It highlights the character Long John Silver.
In this episode called Dead
Reckoning, Jim lad is carted off to boarding school after he causes trouble at
a birthday party. But things become worse when Jim’s roommate turns out
to be Algy, the same boy who actually caused the trouble at the party. Algy is
a horror and gets Jim into more trouble. The 25 strokes of the cane Jim is
given is the 18th time he has been caned since arriving at the
school.
These three clips give a flavour of the episode which
is online here.
The television series was made in 1954 in colour in Australia for the American and British markets before the development of Australian television. It was shown in United States from 1955 and in the UK in 1957 (and repeated in the UK in 1985).
