TV Drama: Leaving
Leaving is a BBC TV Screen Two drama set in 1960 about three boys about to leave a grim Catholic School in Greenock, Scotland. Many who experienced this type of school with teachers who often ruled by fear with the leather belt (tawse) say it is an accurate portrayal. It was made in 1988.
Here are two clips. In the first a class is in progress
and the boys are being questioned on work previously learned. The tension among
the boys who fear being called to answer is evident. As one after another
fails, they are called to the front where they receive two strokes of the tawse
across the palm. The school teacher keeps the strap conveniently at the ready
in the inside pocket of his jacket.
Clip 2 involves the main character who is caught
selling a pornographic magazine (in a Catholic school!). He is beaten in front
of the girls’ class and at the end his palms throb so badly he cannot open the
classroom door to leave.
