Teachers want return of the cane
Many teachers are convinced that modern discipline methods such as “anger-management sessions” are totally inadequate, a UK survey in 2008 finds.
A caning for classroom yobs?
MORE than one in five teachers want the cane brought back to schools, a
survey reveals today.
They believe corporal punishment is the most effective measure for
bringing yob pupils to heel.
Many are convinced that modern discipline methods such as
“anger-management sessions” are totally inadequate. Today’s survey of 6,162
teachers for the Times Educational Supplement found 20.3 per cent
supported “the right to use corporal punishment in extreme cases”. In secondary
schools, the figure rose to 22 per cent.
Nick Seaton, of the Campaign for Real Education pressure group, said:
“Corporal punishment is a useful deterrent that teachers should have at their
disposal.”
But teaching unions last night rejected such a move.
John Dunford, of the Association of School and College Leaders, said:
“Corporal punishment is no longer on the agenda, except in the most uncivilised
countries. I am sure that this barbaric punishment has disappeared for ever.”
