THE secret reason behind John Major’s bitter
opposition to caning can be revealed by the Daily Mirror today (31
October 1996.)
He was beaten on the backside for not doing his
homework while a pupil at a South London grammar school in the 1950s. Young
John was one of 24 boys punished by the geography master.
The humiliation at Rutlish Boys School appears to have
left a deep impression.

His parents, Tom and Gwen, had the chance to oppose
corporal punishment for him but refused.
Geography teacher Mr Walker told his class to visit an
industrial estate to list all the companies. To his fury, just one boy handed
in the work.
Biographer Penny Junor said: “The result was 24 sore
bottoms”.
