Memories: Schoolmaster at Eton explains caning
Here are a couple of rather eccentric clips. Norman Routledge
describes his days as a schoolmaster at Eton, the world-famous English public
(elite) school.
He made a series of 139 short interviews which he uploaded
to YouTube.
In this first one he describes caning at Eton and the
headmaster Tony Trench, who is better known as Anthony
Chenevix-Trench who had a fearsome reputation as a flogger.
In the second clip he more generally describes the “mechanism”
for ordering a boy to be punished.
Routledge (1928 – 2013) was in his time a well-known
mathematician and was a personal friend of Alan Turing.
