'Butch' Trims Now Supplant School Paddle

LONG BEACH. Cal. (AP. 9 June1954) Parents have complained that butch haircuts are being administered at school as disciplinary measures, instead of the conventional paddlings.

In other cases the haircuts look place simply because the pupils’ hair was too long.

Four trimmings have been reported. Juan R. Perez, 34,  truck driver, said yesterday that his son. Johnny, 14, came home from Hamilton Junior High School in North Long Beach with a close butch cut, and reported that he was given his choice of the clippers or a paddling.

Johnny said another boy, Mickey Bryant, also got a haircut. Both had been misbehaving in class, Johnny conceded.

Robert Ware, a gym teacher, said he did the haircutting, with two other teachers and a vice principal as witnesses. Ware said the boys were enthusiastic about the idea and had, in fact, asked for the trims.
