Movie: Heaven Help Us

Heaven Help Us (also released with the title Catholic Boys) centres around life at a Catholic boys’ school in Brooklyn, New York. Michael Dunn (played by Andrew McCarthy when he was in his early twenties) is sent to live with his grandparents after the deaths of his parents. He is sent to school at St. Basil’s, since his grandmother is convinced it was his parent’s wish that he one day become a priest. Of course, this is not how Michael sees his future. Upon arrival, Michael butts heads with some of the other students, but eventually they become pals.

An important subplot involves Brother Constance who is a bully and a bit of a sadist. He is over-fond of corporal punishment and in one scene he beats the McCarthy character on the palms of the hands with a paddle. A later dramatic scene involves Brother Constance, five senior students, a heavy leather stap and a gymnasium.

The film was released in 1985 and is available on DVD and for streaming.
