High school students rally to bring back the paddle
Students at St Augustine Catholic High School in New
Orleans, Louisiana rallied in support of getting paddled. The Archbishop had
previously banned corporal punishment in Catholic schools. But the standards of
misbehaviour at the school had staff and students asking for the paddle to come
back.
In the report carried on ABC15 Arizona in 2011,
one
senior student holds a paddle high as he makes a speech. “This instrument was
used as our traditional form of discipline. When you were caught doing wrong
those two licks could definitely show you right. And it is not an act of
violence, nor does it provoke violence.”
One of the ABC journalists says, “Some of us in the
newsroom could not really believe this.” Then there’s a discussion about the
rights and wrongs of the campaign and viewers weigh-in on Facebook.
